what is a containment boom?

 The oil containment boom is a kind of equipment that collects oil spills, oil stains and other diffusion. There are portable and solid floating oil booms. Basic structure of oil containment boom.

The oil containment boom can float stably on the water surface, which is used to prevent the spread of oil spills in the water area, reduce the area of oil spills, transfer oil spills and floating objects, and protect the water environment. There are many kinds and forms of oil containment booms. But the basic structure is composed of floating body, skirt, tension belt, counterweight and joint.

lFloating body of pvc boom: the part that provides buoyancy for the oil containment boom. Its function is to use air or buoyant materials to provide buoyancy for the oil boom, so that the oil boom can float on the water. The floating body can be placed inside or outside the surface of the oil boom.

lSkirt of oil containment boom: refers to the continuous part of the oil containment boom below the floating body. Its function is to prevent or reduce the escape of oil from under the oil boom.

lTension belt of floating boom: refers to the long belt components (chains, belts) that can bear the horizontal tension exerted on the oil boom. It is mainly used to bear the tension generated by wind, waves, currents and towing.

lCounterweight of Rubberc oil fence: ballast that enables the oil boom to sag and improve the performance of the oil boom, which can make the oil boom in an ideal state in water. Generally, it is made of steel or lead, or water is used as ballast.

The performance indicators of the boom generally refer to the freeboard, draft, height, total height, weight, total buoyancy, floating weight ratio and tensile strength of the boom.

Freeboard of the oil boom: the minimum vertical height above the water line of the Rubberc oil fence. It is used to prevent or reduce oil spillage from splashing over the oil containment fence.

lDraft of pvc oil boom: the minimum vertical depth of the surface layer below the water line of the oil boom.

lHeight of oil boom: the sum of freeboard and draft of oil boom.

lTotal height of oil boom: the maximum vertical height of the oil containment boom.

lWeight of oil boom: the total weight of a fully assembled section of oil boom, including the joint of the oil boom.

lTotal buoyancy of the Rubber silt curtain: the weight of fresh water drained by the water when all the oil containment booms sink.

lTotal floating weight ratio of oil containment boom: the ratio of total buoyancy to total weight of oil containment boom, referred to as floating weight ratio. The high floating weight ratio indicates that the oil boom has a strong ability to restore its floating state after being flooded. This self recovery ability of the oil boom is called wave following. The higher the floating weight ratio, the stronger the self recovery ability and the better the wave following property.

lTensile strength of oil boom: the breaking force when the oil boom is broken.

Storage and maintenance of oil boom. 

The storage and maintenance of the pvc oil boom is directly related to the rapid oil spill emergency response and the effective implementation of containment operations. In order to ensure rapid response, the storage place of the pvc silt curtain should be as close to the wharf, operation site and sensitive resource protection area as possible, and ensure that the storage place of the oil boom is convenient for vehicles and ships to enter and leave. The maintenance of the oil boom mainly refers to the daily maintenance and the maintenance after the recovery operation. The maintenance after the recycling operation mainly checks whether the oil boom is damaged, whether the accessories are complete or whether it needs to be replaced and repaired; Routine maintenance generally check whether the pvc silt curtain is worn, broken, fiber aging, connector corrosion or damage caused by pulling and other loading and unloading reasons, and carry out necessary maintenance and replacement; The oil containment boom that has been placed in the water area for a long time should also be maintained regularly.
